Spider's Bite: Elemental Assassin Book 1, by Jennifer Estep
Narrated by: Lauren Fortgang
Yes, I get that this is a book about an "Assassin". But her and the characters that surround her are difficult to root for. They all seem terribly compromised and ego driven. There was no character I could relate to in any way. The "Detective" who I think is the moralistic center of the book is very high on his horse and condemning until he gets what he wants or is offered sex on the side. Then his morals get tossed aside and you have to listen to a guilt fest from him and listen to him browbeat Gin (the main character) because of his own failings. I think the book was well written but I found it hard to listen to the detectives sanctimony.
I liked that the story teases us about Gins history and her runes. And it didn't go into too much detail about how the world works yet. So theres plenty of room to grow I think. There were some Dwarfs that I found interesting to listen about and would like to hear more.
I like to listen to books that are in a series so I can immediately pick up the second book and continue the story (this one has something like 10 books under its belt). So I might pick up the second one and give it some more time but I'll have to think about it.
